The Roosevelt Island Tramway is an aerial tramway used as part of the New York City mass transit system. Spanning the East River from 59th Street in Manhattan, the Tramway moves over 2.5 million commuters and tourists annually to and from Roosevelt Island. The island was only accessible from Queens by bridge before 1976 and after the installation of the tramway the island became a very successful and thriving neighborhood just 1,800 feet from Manhattan. The tramway served as the only mass transportation link until the subway was finished in 1996. In the summer of 2010, POMA completed the replacement of the original tramway. A state of the art system was designed, manufactured, installed and commissioned with many unique and innovative features. The new tram provides a more reliable and efficient machine in this demanding situation. Since the tramway began operation in November 2010, Leitner-Poma has serviced the Operations and Maintenance contract.
